Scraping Shopify stores was a pain because most sites obfuscate their storefronts behind Cloudflare and bot detection. We had to rotate residential proxies and use headless browsers to bypass the blocks. Eventually, we cracked the pattern by analyzing the /products.json endpoint, which most themes expose publicly. That gave us direct access to store metadata without triggering alarms. Now we can pull thousands of stores per day without getting IP-banned.

The tricky part was deduplicating stores that use custom domains versus myshopify.com subdomains. We had to cross-reference DNS records and redirects to identify the canonical URL. Also, many stores are abandoned or have password protection, so we added a status field to flag them. We spent two weeks refining the regex for extracting store names and contact emails from the HTML. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for most sales teams.

We also integrated with the Shopify API for stores that have it enabled, which gives us reliable data on product counts and last update timestamps. But for the rest, we rely on page scraping. The data is raw and messy, but that's what you get when you scrape the web. We've cleaned it up enough to avoid obvious garbage, but don't expect perfection. If you need clean data, you'll have to do some deduplication yourself.
