Scraping gas station data was a pain in the ass. Most listings are fragmented across state registries, fuel card networks, and random franchise sites. We ended up writing custom parsers for each state's DMV and environmental agency. Took us 6 months to get it clean. But now we have every station with a valid address and phone, plus fuel type and ownership. If you need to sell to gas stations, this is your starting point.

The biggest headache was deduplication. Same station would appear under multiple names (e.g., 'Shell' vs 'Shell Oil Co') or with slightly different addresses. We built a fuzzy matching algorithm that cross-references geocoordinates and phone numbers. After cleaning, we went from 200k raw records to 148k unique stations. That's the number you see. We also tag chain vs independent, which is critical for targeting.

We didn't just scrape public directories. We also pulled data from fuel card acceptance lists and convenience store associations. That gave us additional fields like 'accepts FleetCor' or 'has EV charging'. Some of those sources are PDFs, so we had to OCR them. Ugly, but it works. The result is a CSV that actually has columns you'll use, not just name/address/phone.

Data Schema & Dictionary

station_id

Unique identifier for each gas station. We generated this after dedup. If you're doing CRM uploads or tracking, use this as the key. Don't bother with the old IDs from source sites, they're inconsistent.

brand

The brand name as displayed on the station (e.g., Shell, Exxon, or 'Independent'). We cleaned up variations so you can filter by brand. Note: some stations are 'unbranded' but still have a brand listed if they're part of a cooperative. Don't assume it's the parent company.

ownership_type

Either 'Chain' or 'Independent'. We determined this by checking if the station is part of a known chain (more than 10 locations) or runs under a franchise. This is gold for sales—independents are more likely to listen to a pitch, chains have procurement processes.

phone

Primary phone number. We verified these by calling a sample (about 5%) and only kept numbers that worked. A few may be outdated, but we refresh quarterly. If you get a disconnected tone, use the 'alternate_phone' field.

address_full

Full street address including city, state, and ZIP. We standardized to USPS format. Don't use this for geocoding—use the lat/long fields instead. We include it for mailing labels or when you need a human-readable address.

latitude

Latitude coordinate of the station entrance. We geocoded the address and then manually corrected outliers. This is accurate to about 10 meters. Use this for territory mapping or distance-based targeting.

longitude

Longitude coordinate. Same accuracy as latitude. If you're building a route optimization tool, these coordinates are good enough.

fuel_types

Comma-separated list of fuel types available (e.g., 'Regular, Diesel, Premium'). We sourced this from station websites and fuel card directories. Not 100% complete, but covers 90% of stations. If you're selling EV chargers, check the 'ev_charger' column instead.

ev_charger

Boolean (TRUE/FALSE) indicating if the station has an EV charging station. We cross-referenced with PlugShare and DOE data. This is a big deal for targeting clean energy products.

accepts_fleet_cards

Boolean indicating if the station accepts fleet fuel cards (e.g., FleetCor, WEX). We pulled this from card acceptance lists. If you're selling B2B fuel management software, this is your filter.

last_updated

Date when we last verified this record. We re-scrape every 90 days, so this tells you how stale the data might be. If it's older than 6 months, treat with caution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fresh is this data?
We scrape on the 1st of every month. Then we run a verification pass for phone numbers and addresses. If you find a bounce, tell us and we'll swap the credit. Simple.
What's the total count?
148,213 unique gas stations in the US. That includes all 50 states plus DC. We exclude territories like Puerto Rico and Guam because the data quality was crap. If you need those, we can probably get them, but it'll cost extra.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Sure. We'll send you a 100-record sample for free. Just give us your email. But don't expect us to send the whole database for 'evaluation'—that's not happening.
How do you handle data licensing?
You get a perpetual license for internal use. You can use it to contact these leads, enrich your CRM, whatever. You can't resell the raw data or publish it as a dataset. If we find out you're redistributing, we'll terminate your license and possibly sue. Standard stuff.
What format is the CSV in?
UTF-8 encoded, comma-separated. First row is headers. We include a data dictionary as a separate PDF. If you need Excel-friendly formatting, you'll have to convert it yourself. We're not your IT department.
