Research questions
- How should cross-border firms be classified?
- What counts as current evidence?
- How do local privacy rules affect outreach?
Venture firm research worksheet
Classify firms using public evidence about activity, stage, geography, and thesis. A firm profile is not proof that a specific partner is available or interested.
| Column | What to record | Validation rule |
|---|---|---|
| firm_name | Public firm or management-company name | Use the firm’s own spelling |
| website | Official website | Confirm it belongs to the firm |
| stage_focus | Published stage or “not stated” | Quote or link the supporting source |
| sector_focus | Published sectors or thesis | Do not infer from one portfolio company |
| geography | Published investment geography | Separate office location from investment scope |
| activity_signal | Recent fund, investment, or portfolio evidence | Record the date and source |
| source_url | Evidence URL | Required for every conclusion |
Firm qualification checks
- Prefer the firm’s own thesis and portfolio pages for stated focus.
- Use regulatory or industry sources to distinguish active managers from historical listings.
- Record “not stated” instead of filling gaps with assumptions.
- Keep firm research separate from personal contact discovery and outreach permission.
A defensible workflow
- Start with a primary or official source and record the URL and access date.
- Separate observed facts from assumptions. Never infer a personal email address or verification score.
- Deduplicate by legal name, domain, and location; keep evidence for every important claim.
- Before outreach, confirm applicable privacy, marketing, and opt-out requirements.
Evidence record
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Entity | Organization name and website | Prevents person, branch, and brand mix-ups |
| Observation | Specific fact found in the source | Keeps research auditable |
| Source | URL, publisher, and access date | Allows independent checking |
| Confidence | High, medium, or unresolved | Stops assumptions becoming facts |
| Action | Review, correct, remove, or do not contact | Creates a responsible next step |
