List Of Venture Capital Firms In California

Scraping VC firms in California sounded easy. It wasn't. Crunchbase and Pitchbook lock everything behind auth walls, and their APIs are expensive. We ended up stitching together SEC filings, LinkedIn scraping (careful with that), and a ton of public PDFs. The hard part wasn't getting names—it was verifying who's actually active and who's a zombie fund. We filtered out firms with no recent activity or dead websites. What you get is a list that's actually useful, not just a directory dump.

The schema evolved after we realized investors hate generic data. We added 'last_funding_year' because everyone asks 'are they still deploying?' We also included 'investment_stage' because a seed-stage firm won't care about your Series B. We parsed a lot of 'about us' pages to get that right. It's not perfect—some firms are vague by design—but it's better than guessing. Also, we deduped heavily. There are a lot of shell entities and holding companies that look like VCs but aren't.

One thing that bit us: California is huge. We started with a broad query and got 1,400+ firms. But many were tiny, one-person shops or corporate venture arms. We cut anything with fewer than 3 portfolio companies or less than $10M in AUM (if we could find it). That shrank the list to 850. Still a lot, but now it's mostly real players. We also cross-referenced with LinkedIn to get current employee counts. If a firm has zero employees on LinkedIn, it's probably dead. We left them out.
