Scraping this niche was a nightmare. The usual sources like LinkedIn and company registries are gated or stale. We had to stitch together state contractor licenses, SEC filings, and obscure M&A databases to find who actually owns these HVAC shops. The private equity angle is the kicker: they hide behind portfolio company names. Took us three iterations of parsing to get the ownership chain right.

The biggest headache was deduplication. Same company appears under multiple legal entities (e.g., 'ABC Mechanical' vs 'ABC Mechanical Services Inc'). We wrote a fuzzy matching script that cross-references addresses, phone numbers, and EINs. It's not perfect, but we manually verified about 60% of the list. If you find a duplicate, tell us and we'll fix it. That's the deal.

We also pulled employee count and revenue estimates from a mix of sources, but honestly, those are guesses. The real gold is the ownership info and the contract license data. That's verifiable. The revenue numbers are for rough targeting only. Don't build a financial model on them. You've been warned.

Data Schema & Dictionary

Company Name

The operating name of the HVAC company. This is what you'd see on a truck, not the legal entity. Sales reps need this to sound like they know the prospect.

Parent PE Firm

The private equity firm that owns the company. This is the real decision-maker for strategic moves. Knowing this lets you pitch to the right person or avoid the wrong one.

Portfolio Company Legal Name

The legal entity under which the business is registered. Often differs from the trade name. Useful for legal research or when checking if they're registered in your state.

License Number

The state-issued HVAC contractor license number. We scraped this from public state databases. It's proof they're legit and a way to cross-reference if they've been cited.

License Status

Whether the license is active, expired, or revoked. You don't want to sell to a company that can't legally operate. This flag saves you from wasting time.

State(s) of Operation

Which states the company is licensed in. Obvious, but critical for territory-based selling. Also, some PE firms consolidate licenses, so this can hint at expansion plans.

Employee Count

Estimated number of employees. We pulled from business directories, so it's approximate. Use it to gauge company size and whether they have a dedicated procurement team.

Revenue Estimate

Rough revenue range in USD. Based on industry averages and employee count. It's a starting point for qualification, not a precise figure. Don't quote it in a pitch.

Website

The company's website. Sometimes it's a generic landing page, sometimes it's a PE firm's site. Either way, you can scrape it for more intel.

Phone Number

The main office phone. We scraped it from the license data and directories. Expect a receptionist, not the decision-maker. But you need a way in.

Address

The physical address of the headquarters or main office. Useful for territory mapping or if you want to send a physical mailer.

Date of Last Update

The last time we refreshed this record. Data rots. If this is old, the info might be stale. We update quarterly, but not everything changes.

Ownership Change Date

When the PE firm acquired the company. This is a strong trigger event. If it's recent, they're likely making changes and might be more open to new vendors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fresh is this data?
We scrape the license databases and ownership records every quarter. The last update was about 3 weeks ago. If you find a dead number or bad email, report it and we'll swap the credit. That's the deal.
How do you determine the PE ownership?
We cross-reference SEC filings, press releases, and M&A databases. It's not foolproof. Sometimes the PE firm is hidden behind a shell company. If you find an error, tell us and we'll fix it. We're not infallible, but we're better than guessing.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Sure. We can send you 20 rows free. Just ask. If you're not satisfied with the sample, don't buy. No hard feelings.
What format do you deliver in?
A raw CSV file. One row per company. Standard UTF-8 encoding. You'll get a download link immediately after purchase. If you need Excel, you can import it yourself.
Do you provide email addresses?
No. We don't scrape emails because they're mostly garbage. You'll get phone numbers and websites. If you want emails, you'll need to enrich it yourself. Trust me, you're better off that way.
