Scraping investor emails is like pulling teeth. AngelList and Crunchbase have tight API limits, but we brute-forced the public SEC filings to extract direct emails of LP/GP contacts. The catch? The SEC data is a mess of OCR errors and mismatched fields. We wrote a regex gauntlet to clean it, then cross-referenced with LinkedIn profiles to validate names and titles. It's not perfect, but it's better than paying $5k for a list that's 70% dead.

The first pass at scraping investor emails from event attendee lists was a disaster. Most sites hide emails behind bot protection or require login. We pivoted to scraping the contact pages of VC firms and angel networks directly. That gave us the gold: direct emails of partners and analysts. The catch is only ~30% of firms list emails publicly. So we supplemented with pattern-based guesses (firstname@firm.com) and verified them via SMTP handshake. It's a numbers game, but we got the hit rate to 60%.

We tried scraping Twitter bios for investor emails. That was a rabbit hole—some people put them in, but it's mostly spam. The real goldmine was the SEC's EDGAR database. Every fund's ADV filing lists key personnel and sometimes their emails. We wrote a parser to extract those, then matched them to LinkedIn to get the current title. It's slow and dirty, but it's 100% legal and the data is clean. We still have to manually review a few thousand rows for false positives.
